Company Description

ShareAction

We are at a pivotal moment: the climate and biodiversity crises are deepening, and inequalities are even more marked in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. The global investment system has an oversized impact on many of these global challenges. We want to make sure that impact is positive. At ShareAction we work with investors, policymakers and individuals to unleash the positive potential of the investment system. We aim to build a world where our financial system serves our planet and its people.

Team

ShareAction’s newly-launched Biodiversity programme will work with asset managers, asset owners and banks to raise the profile of biodiversity loss, drive stronger biodiversity performance by corporates and improve policy and regulation to incentivise action to address biodiversity loss. In early 2022 we secured funding to enable us to launch the first phase of the programme and we are now building a team to drive progress towards a financial system that halts and reverses the biodiversity crisis.

Position

The destruction of our natural world is one of the most pressing crises we face today. Our survival as we know it is dependent on nature. Its destruction is undermining our societies and our global economy. Tackling the loss of nature will require urgent and transformative action by all actors, and the financial sector has a major role to play.

We are seeking to appoint a Senior Policy Officer – Biodiversity to work within the UK Policy team to help influence regulation and policy making to drive a more responsible and sustainable financial sector. This role is focused on a distinct project of work to influence the rules and incentives that govern the financial services sector, specifically in relation to tackling biodiversity loss. It will work to raise investors’ voices for improved policies on business and biodiversity and embed biodiversity within financial regulation and supervision.

What you’ll do:

  • You will develop a policy influencing campaign, building on our existing work on biodiversity
  • You will build relations with practitioners and policy makers to develop interest in ShareAction’s biodiversity work
  • In collaboration with others, you will identify and respond to key opportunities to influence key UK and EU policy makers and regulators on biodiversity, including developing policy recommendations, drafting and disseminating Parliamentary questions, and drafting amendments to legislation
  • You will draft consultation responses and briefings for UK and EU policy stakeholders, under guidance from the UK and EU Policy and Biodiversity teams
  • Working with the Communications team, you will amplify our messaging on biodiversity-related policy work through webinars, social media, blogs, and articles
  • You will provide regular updates on our biodiversity-related policy work to ShareAction networks, as well as individual supporters, external allies and funders
  • You will help to organise events aimed at influencing practitioners and policymakers
  • You will attend events that are relevant to our biodiversity-related policy work
  • You will keep up-to-date with new legislation and relevant developments and share learnings with the UK and EU Policy and Biodiversity teams
  • You will play a role in wider team and cross ShareAction activity related to biodiversity to foster collaboration and partnerships

Please note this list is not exhaustive and the role might change slightly from time to time.

Requirements

What you’ll bring to the team:

  • You will be able to demonstrate your knowledge of biodiversity loss
  • You will have a strong interest in sustainable investment issues
  • An understanding of the UK and/or EU policy-making process/how laws are made
  • You will have excellent written and verbal communications and can demonstrate experience of tailoring your message to a range of different audiences
  • You will be a natural collaborator and team-player making sure you get the best out of those you work with
  • You will be able to manage a range of competing priorities and deadlines
