Company Description

Project STOP (www.stopoceanplastics.com) is a new initiative to accelerate waste management system improvements in South-East Asia, starting in Indonesia, co-developed by Borealis and SYSTEMIQ. The project aims to make a scalable front-line contribution to marine plastic debris prevention and ocean health. The first city partnership was launched in May 2018 in Muncar, Banyuwangi, East Java, where the project team will operate for 3 years. In 2019, Project STOP is now ready to scale to an additional city, Pasuruan, in east Java and recruiting a team for the initial project work.

 

 

Position

The Waste Collection Officer will have a critical role in Project STOP. He/she will support the Chief Delivery Officer in successfully delivering an efficient, circular waste management system in Pasuran,Indonesia – which is the foundation for the wider success of the project – and supporting the scaling and replication of the project to new city locations.

The role will require solid waste management experience, logistics and program implementation expertise, analytical and quantitative problem-solving skills, attention to detail, creativity and a high level of personal drive. Responsibilities

  1. Work closely with Chief Delivery Officer to ensure successful execution of the STOP project in the city partner location (Muncar / Banyuwangi) during the system transition phase for the city.
  2. Provide strategic thought leadership on municipal waste collection system design and lead implementation of the designed system, including, waste collection vehicles and routes, collection workers recruitment and training, collection worker’s work flow and task assignment.
  3. Implement collection systems in partnership with villages and other stakeholders.
  4. Creatively address technical issues for the team as they arise and develop solutions to prevent them from recurring.
  5. Build a network of technical stakeholder relationships.
  6. Represent the STOP project to key stakeholders.
  7. Train local stakeholders to sustainably operate the collection program on their own.
  8. Assist with related areas of work, including behaviour change campaigns, material processing, and programme governance, as needed.
  9. [In time] Contribute to replication and scaling of STOP Project in other city locations in Indonesia.

Requirements

  1. At least 5 years environmental sanitation experience, preferably in solid waste management, OR shipping/transportation experience that includes a strong customer service element (waste collection experience is preferred)
  2. Holds a Bachelor degree in environmental engineering, environmental science, regional planning, civil engineering or similar).
  3. Highly developed analytical and quantitative problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  4. Able to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  5. Ability to maintain positive attitude under high pressure.
  6. Ability to communicate and work closely with village and kecamatan level government, community leaders and community workers.
  7. Ability to communicate effectively in English and Bahasa Indonesian.
  8. Willingness to be full time stationed in Pasuruan during the contract, as well as a four month training period to be stationed in Banyuwangi/Muncar, the site of our first city partnership.
