Project STOP (www.stopoceanplastics.com) is a new initiative to accelerate waste management system improvements in South-East Asia, starting in Indonesia, co-developed by Borealis and SYSTEMIQ. The project aims to make a scalable front-line contribution to marine plastic debris prevention and ocean health. The first city partnership was launched in May 2018 in Muncar, Banyuwangi, East Java, where the project team will operate for 3 years. In 2019, Project STOP is now ready to scale to an additional city, Pasuruan, in east Java and recruiting a team for the initial project work.

Position

Role description

The Technical Facilities Project Officer will have a critical role in Project STOP. He/she will support the Chief Delivery Officer and Operations Officer in successfully delivering an efficient, circular waste management system in Pasuruan by effectively setting-up and operating multiple TPST 3R and waste bank facilities.  

The role will require solid waste management experience, analytical and quantitative problem-solving skills, attention to detail, creativity and a high level of personal drive. Responsibilities

  1. Work closely with Chief Delivery Officer and Operations Officer to ensure successful execution of the STOP project in the city partner location (Muncar / Banyuwangi) during the system transition phase for the city (estimated 2 years)
  2. Provide strategic thought leadership on municipal waste system design and lead implementation of the designed system, including facilitation of TPST operations and sortation infrastructure
  3. Creatively address technical issues for the team as they arise and develop solutions to prevent them from recurring
  4. Model waste system variables for system optimization
  5. Build a network of technical stakeholder relationships
  6. Represent the STOP project to key stakeholders when the Chief Delivery Officer is not available
  7. [In time] Contribute to replication and scaling of STOP Project in other city locations in Indonesia.

Requirements

Qualifications and requirements

  1. At least 5 years environmental sanitation experience, preferably in solid waste management
  2. Holds at least bachelor degree of any subject (preferably but not required: environmental engineering, environmental science, regional planning, civil engineering)
  3. Highly developed analytical and quantitative problem-solving skills and attention to detail
  4. Able to work collaboratively in a team environment
  5. Ability to communicate effectively in English and Bahasa Indonesian
  6. Willingness to be full time stationed  in Muncar / Banyuwangi during the 2-3 year city transition period
