Global Methane Solutions Programme Manager

SYSTEMIQ London United Kingdom Energy
Warning! Vacancy expired

Company Description

SYSTEMIQ was set up in 2016 to drive the implementation of the Paris Agreement and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by transforming markets and business models in three key economic systems: land use, materials and energy. By addressing failures in these systems, SYSTEMIQ aims to unlock economic opportunities that benefit business, society and the environment. We do this through five activities:

  1. Convene and support coalitions of leaders to shape policies and business strategies that will rapidly transform economic activity
  2. Work with companies that want to be pioneers in and drivers of change towards more sustainable systems
  3. Co-create and incubate the market solutions most likely to build regenerative economic systems
  4. Invest our own venture capital and expertise in opportunities with the biggest potential to drive rapid system change
  5. Direct larger pools of capital into regenerative economic systems, enabling them to scale and multiply.

To deliver in these areas, we recruit and develop distinctive and varied individuals who strive to achieve our mission, challenge the status quo and act as change leaders.

Position

We are looking for a Programme Manager to join the Global Methane Solutions team in London. Global Methane Solutions is a partnership between Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) and SYSTEMIQ, focused on achieving urgent and lasting reductions, at scale, in methane emissions from the global oil and gas industry. We do so by designing and deploying a market-based gas certification system to help accelerate methane emissions reductions at scale. This will help create the down-market incentives to ensure abatement solutions are commercially deliverable. Under this partnership, SYSTEMIQ leads the efforts to stimulate a market for methane emissions certified gas in the gas markets serving Europe, including Eurasia, Northern Africa and the Middle East, while RMI leads a parallel effort in the US.

The Programme Manager will work closely with the Global Methane Solutions senior leadership team (programme director, senior content leads and other team leads) across SYSTEMIQ and RMI to manage the strategy and budget and delivery of the programme. Understanding of European political systems, including European Commission regulatory efforts, is required. While we are a mission driven team striving to urgently bring down emissions, the candidate should be comfortable working with the oil and gas industry to do so. Previous oil and gas industry experience or basic understanding is a plus, as well as the understanding of the science behind the urgent issue of methane emissions.

The Programme Manager will be responsible for:

  • Project managing the European side of the Global Methane Solutions team, liaising closely with US counterparts at RMI
  • Managing a team of 1-3 associates, as well as coordinating a complex network of stakeholders
  • Be the master “gate keeper” of all information between SYSTEMIQ and RMI and represent all European activities
  • Managing the stakeholder network (buyers, sellers, industry associations, related NGO’s, partners, industry consortiums, policy makers etc)
  • Coordinating the program with the GMS Europe external experts and consultants (technical, commercial, branding, communications, legal, etc…)
  • Developing and maintaining programme budget
  • Being the spokesperson on oil and gas methane emissions market certification for the wider SYSTEMIQ organisation
  • Overseeing all activities for EU methane certification market development
  • Strong cultural understanding and awareness of the diversity and complexity of European markets and policy landscape
  • Developing and presenting materials for senior stakeholder meetings
  • Managing relationships within partner organisations and the Global Methane Solutions/SYSTEMIQ communications teams to publicise and promote engagements
  • Recruitment for the programme
  • Travelling (some, mostly within Europe) to and from stakeholder meetings
  • May also be expected to support and deliver other projects and tasks, in line with your skills and experience that contribute to SYSTEMIQ’s overall organisational objectives

Requirements

The ideal candidate will have :

  • A minimum of 8-10 years relevant work experience in the energy sector
  • Bachelors degree required; advanced degree in a related field is a plus
  • Solid understanding of climate change science and related issues and policies
  • Very strong people/managerial skills
  • High level of enthusiasm for running complex teams
  • Very strong communication skills, both written and oral
  • Multi-stakeholder team management expertise
  • Confidence to become the in-house methane expert and represent the organization externally
  • Strong budgetary management skills
  • Adaptable, resourceful and able to prioritise their workload to meet deadlines while responding to multiple stakeholder needs
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects while keeping key stakeholders informed and meeting critical deadlines
  • Pragmatic optimist approach to building a better systems for the environment
  • European language skills aside from English are a plus

The ideal candidate should be a project manager in a very entrepreneurial setting – willing to roll up their sleeves to do research and create presentations, but also able operate at a high-level with executives both within and outside of SYSTEMIQ. The candidate should be able to think strategically about how to design big systemic shifts, but also able to manage the day-to-day activities of the team.

This is an exciting opportunity to help launch a new market for certified gas in Europe at a critical time in the global energy transition. Ideal start date is in late July-early August 2020.
