Company Description

Project STOP (www.stopoceanplastics.com) is a new initiative to accelerate waste management system improvements in South-East Asia, starting in Indonesia, co-developed by Borealis and SYSTEMIQ. The project aims to make a scalable front-line contribution to marine plastic debris prevention and ocean health. The first city partnership was launched in May 2018 in Muncar, Banyuwangi, East Java, where the project team will operate for 3 years. In early 2019, Project STOP  was able scale to an additional city, Pasuruan, in east Java.  We are now ready to scale our third city, Jembrana, Bali, and are recruiting a team for the initial project work.

Position

Role description

The Community Development Project Officer will have a critical role in Project STOP. He/she will support the Chief Delivery Officer and Operations Officer in ensuring the project meets community and government needs and local stakeholders are committed to the changes required. He/she will also develop and implement a behavior change program that inspires Jembrana households to participate in a clean, sorted waste system.

Responsibilities

  1. Work closely with Chief Delivery Officer and Operations Officer to ensure successful execution of the STOP project in the city partner location (Jembrana) during the system transition phase for the city (estimated 2-3 years)
  2. Translate STOP Project goals into more detailed behavior change and community development goals
  3. Identify potential community partners and build lasting relationships
  4. Develop and implement a community engagement strategy that motivates thousands of households to both separate their waste and use new waste services
  5. Lead and coordinate a group of community facilitators to delivery community engagement strategy
  6. Build positive consensus with city and community leaders to support the STOP program and work together towards common goals that affect the future sustainability of the community
  7. Represent the STOP project to key stakeholders when the Chief Delivery Officer is not available
  8. [In time] Contribute to replication and scaling of STOP Project in other city locations in Indonesia.

Requirements

Qualifications and requirements

  1. At least 5 years’ experience, preferably in behavior change approaches and/or community development/organizing.
  2. Holds at least bachelor degree of any subject (preferably but not required: social science, communication or public health)
  3. Experience in designing a behavior change program and activities
  4. Field experience running a behavior change program
  5. Able to build trust with leaders in the community and assist residents in managing change
  6. Able to influence/motivate new household behavior without use of formal authority
  7. Ideally have an established network within Jembrana/Bali (although not required)
  8. Able to work collaboratively in a team environment and work well with a diverse group of waste stakeholders
  9. Ability to communicate effectively in English and Bahasa Indonesian
  10. Willingness to be full time stationed in Jembrana during the contract, as well as a four-month training period to be stationed in Banyuwangi/Muncar, the site of our first city partnership.
