Project STOP is a new initiative to accelerate waste management system improvements in South-East Asia, starting in Indonesia. Project STOP works with cities to create effective waste management systems that eliminate leakage of plastics into the ocean. Rather than building traditional linear systems where waste is collected and simply disposed at landfill, STOP also aims to create circular systems where the majority of hard-to-recycle waste is recycled into new products and the resulting economic value lowers the financial burden of the waste system on the city.

The Business Development expert will have a critical role in Project STOP. He/she will support the Program Manager in successfully building an economically sustainable circular waste system in Muncar, Banyuwangi, as well as ensuring the Project is delivered on time and within budget – and supporting the scaling and replication of the project to new city locations.

The role will require working with Badan Usaha Milik Desa (BUMDES) and other type of organizations to build sustainable waste businesses and find the best markets for their output. This person will ideally be a strong negotiator, and a natural entrepreneur. They will have demonstrated success in identifying opportunities to run profitable waste and recycling businesses.

Responsibilities

1. Work closely with Program Manager to ensure successful execution of the STOP project in the city partner location (Muncar / Banyuwangi), especially in developing a financially sustainable waste system.
2. Identify markets and negotiate buying/selling contracts for plastic waste, especially "lower value" thin film, sachet and plastic bag waste that may not be recyclable locally
3. Identify markets for organic waste.
4. Explore valorization options for organic and inorganic waste.
5. Develop business models for TPST 3R operators to recycle/reprocess the majority of their inorganic and organic waste
6. Provide business guidance and mentoring to new and existing BUMDES or other form or organization to build economically efficient waste businesses
7. Provide entrepreneurial training for TPST 3R operators including but not limited to:
   • Business strategy development and implementation
   • Product development
   • Organizational management
   • Bookkeeping
   • Marketing
   • Procurement negotiation
8. Build a network of plastic waste buyer/recycler relationships
9. Identify and analyze business opportunities related to waste management which can be operated by BUMDES or other type of organization.
10. Develop business plan for all options of waste related business activity.
11. Develop accountable, transparent and sustainable waste fee collection mechanism
12. Close coordination with local governments which including village, kecamatan and kabupaten level to ensure government budget is allocated for waste management.
13. Ensuring the institutionalization of Project STOP’s business development approaches within local government and BUMDES/other type of organization.
14. Represent the STOP project to key stakeholders when the Program Manager is not available
15. [In time] Contribute to replication and scaling of STOP Project in other city locations in Indonesia.

Qualifications and requirements

1. At least 15 years business strategy development, entrepreneur capacity building or similar, ideally for community run businesses (UMKM, Koperasi, KSM, BKM, etc)
2. Holds a Bachelor or Masters degree, ideally in Economic Science, Management, Business Administration
3. Strong analytical skills and able to demonstrate a comprehensive systemic thinking
4. Strong problems solving skills
5. Strong negotiation skills
6. Strong entrepreneurial skills 
7. Strong financial literacy
8. Passion for helping others achieve financial sustainability
9. Able to work collaboratively in a team environment
10. Able to demonstrate positive attitude and productive approaches towards challenges in a high-pressure environment
11. Ability to communicate effectively in English and Bahasa Indonesian
12. Willingness to be full time stationed in Muncar / Banyuwangi
