Associate- New regulatory Gas Project

SYSTEMIQ London United Kingdom Energy
Warning! Vacancy expired

Company Description

SYSTEMIQ was set up in 2016 to drive the implementation of the Paris Agreement and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by transforming markets and business models in three key economic systems: land use, materials and energy. By addressing failures in these systems, SYSTEMIQ aims to unlock economic opportunities that benefit business, society and the environment. We do this through five activities:

  1. Convene and support coalitions of leaders to shape policies and business strategies that will rapidly transform economic activity
  2. Work with companies that want to be pioneers in and drivers of change towards more sustainable systems
  3. Co-create and incubate the market solutions most likely to build regenerative economic systems
  4. Invest our own venture capital and expertise in opportunities with the biggest potential to drive rapid system change
  5. Direct larger pools of capital into regenerative economic systems, enabling them to scale and multiply.

To deliver in these areas, we recruit and develop distinctive and varied individuals who strive to achieve our mission, challenge the status quo and act as change leaders

Position

We are looking for an Associate to join the Global Methane Solutions team in London. The Global Methane Solutions is a partnership between the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) and SYSTEMIQ which seeks to achieve urgent and lasting reductions at scale in methane emissions from the global oil and gas industry by advancing the market landscape for methane abatement. Together, we are addressing the lack of data and issue awareness by developing thought leadership to articulate the urgent case for change toward sustainable development. We are developing a global tool that will combine methane emissions data and insights from industry and cutting-edge science into a data action engine that will pinpoint priority areas for abatement action. The tool will have tailored outputs to inform investors, regulators, operators, gas buyers and sellers and the general public to drive abatement activities. Armed with an understanding of the challenges and solutions, we aim to influence markets and policies, to steer action to unlock economic opportunities that benefit business, society and the environment. Specifically, SYSTEMIQ will lead the efforts to stimulate a market for low-leakage gas in the gas markets serving Europe, including Eurasia, Northern Africa and the Middle East, while RMI leads a parallel effort in the US. This will help create the down-market incentives to ensure abatement solutions are commercially deliverable.

The ideal candidate will have a strong numeracy experience and analytical skills. At the same time, we are looking for someone with good basic commercial sense. The applicant should have good personal presentational skills, basic common sense, as opposed to a purely highly analytical skillset. The Associate will be a strong communicator and feel comfortable building relationships with senior stakeholders from partner organisations.

The candidate should be a team player in a very entrepreneurial setting – willing to roll up their sleeves to do research, build models and create presentations, but also able to make a good impression in external meetings with high-level stakeholders. The candidate should be able to think strategically about how to design big systemic shifts, but also practically about how to concretely implement ideas in real markets.

The Associate will work closely with the partnership’s senior leadership team (programme director, senior content leads, programme manager and other team leads). We hope this person will particularly take ownership over building an understanding of the data tool side and the application within Europe.

While we are a mission driven team striving to urgently bring down emissions, the candidate should be comfortable working with the oil and gas industry to do so. Previous oil and gas industry experience or basic understanding is a plus.

This is an exciting opportunity to help launch a new market in Europe at a critical time in the global energy transition.

The Associate will be responsible for:

  • Designing and delivering and analytical models about the European gas markets
  • Becoming the EU team “expert” on methane data (existing sources, measurement, applications etc)
  • Research as needed for a differentiated gas market development
  • Developing presentation materials for senior stakeholder meetings
  • Working with partner organisations and the Global Methane Solutions/SYSTEMIQ communications teams to publicise and promote engagements
  • Travelling (some, mostly within Europe) to and from stakeholder meetings
  • May also be expected to support and deliver other projects and tasks, in line with your skills and experience that contribute to SYSTEMIQ’s overall organisational objectives

Requirements

  • At least 1-year work experience
  • Exceptionally strong analytical skills with high level of comfort and enthusiasm for building dynamic excel models and synthesising large data sets
  • Basic problem solving and structuring skills, delivering intuitive presentations of complex data
  • Work well in a team
  • Willing to voice opinions, ask questions and learn on your feet
  • Adaptable, resourceful and able to prioritise their workload to meet deadlines while responding to multiple stakeholder needs
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects while keeping key stakeholders informed and meeting critical deadlines
  • Interest in building a better systems
