Associate - Sustainable Special Economic Zones (Ethiopia)

SYSTEMIQ Addis Ababa Ethiopia Energy
Warning! Vacancy expired

Company Description

SYSTEMIQ is an organisation driving system change in clean energy, circular material solutions and sustainable land use. By addressing failures in these areas, SYSTEMIQ aims to unlock economic opportunities that benefit business, society and the environment.

We connect the right people, ideas, technologies, and capital to transform economic systems. We do this through five activities:

  1. Convene and support coalitions of leaders to shape policies and business strategies that will rapidly transform economic activity
  2. Work with companies that want to be pioneers in and drivers of change towards more sustainable systems
  3. Co-create and incubate the market solutions most likely to build regenerative economic systems
  4. Invest our own venture capital and expertise in opportunities with the biggest potential to drive rapid system change
  5. Direct larger pools of capital into regenerative economic systems, so that these scale and multiply.

In order to deliver in these areas, we recruit and develop distinctive and varied individuals who strive to achieve our mission, challenge the status quo and act as change leaders.

Position

Over the last year, SYSTEMIQ has been developing the concept of Sustainable Special Economic Zones (SSEZs), and executing our pilot zone in Lagos, Nigeria. SSEZs represent the next horizon in industrial development; moving beyond “do no harm” principles of export processing zones and low-carbon zones, towards driving the Sustainable Development Goals through positive commercial, social and environmental impact. We do this by: 1) supporting inclusive businesses that have outsized SDG-impact in Nigeria; 2) designing circular infrastructure models with our engineering partners to improve access to utilities and bring down operating costs; 3) executing the zone by attracting tenant operating partners and mobilising investment in zone and tenant-specific infrastructure.

Starting next year, we will be expanding to East Africa and have been asked to replicate our work from Nigeria in both Kenya and Ethiopia. Overall, the ambition is to create replicable models for driving industrialisation that is both economically beneficial and that drives huge social and environmental impact throughout the region.

We are looking for an Associate to be based in Addis Ababa from January 2019 who can help us further execute this vision and series of projects.
