Position

As Production Editor you’ll work across a portfolio of nine RSPB print publications, reaching well over a million members of the UK’s biggest nature conservation organisation.

The range of titles comprises of The RSPB Magazine, a quarterly magazine for adult members, a suite of three age-appropriate magazines for children and young members, as well as a portfolio of five supplementary newsletters. All of these have recently undergone an organisation-wide rebrand to promote clear messaging about the urgency of threats to nature and wildlife.

As Production Editor, you will be working across this portfolio of nine titles, plus other projects and digital work. You will be responsible for the accuracy, tone and flair of our content. You will tailor and repurpose content for these different audiences, as well as play a key role in managing the editorial workflow. You will contribute to ideas and content creation and make sure every page is sub-edited, fitted and ready on deadline.

Accountabilities

Working closely with the editor, designers and the RSPB’s communications team, you will:

  • Ensure all copy is accurate, well-crafted and aligned with RSPB branding, policy and tone
  • Subedit raw copy and InDesign layouts, fitting and finishing pages, assisting with picture research, and contributing editorial flair and an unfailing eye for detail
  • Take ownership of several rounds of proofs and amends from the RSPB team, via creating and sharing PDFs via our online proofing system
  • Manage the stakeholder approvals process, collating comments and actioning amends from multiple stakeholders across the wider organisation
  • Manage the flow of page proofs between client, designers and repro
  • Write engagingly in appropriate tones for different audiences, including heads, sells, short-form content for young children and adult nature lovers, and occasional feature-writing.
  • Contribute to content planning, idea gathering, development and the general creative success of the magazines

Requirements

Sub editing

Significant experience as a sub editor or production editor in a fast-paced workflow environment. Good working knowledge of Adobe InDesign.

Editorial management

Enjoys and thrives working in a fast-paced, complex editorial environment across publications at different phases of production simultaneously. Organised, adaptable, calm under pressure.

Writing skills

Can adapt and maintain editorial tone, style and grammar. Scrupulous but not pedantic. Able to write eye-catching headlines, interesting standfirsts and compelling captions.

People skills

Be comfortable working with editors, account managers and contributors, and able to sensitively handle client demands and requests. Good written and verbal communication skills are essential.

Nature enthusiast

A general interest in nature, and knowledge of key conservation issues, are strongly preferred. Bird and wildlife expertise is not essential but must have good research and fact-checking skills to ensure accuracy.

Children’s content

Experience of writing and structuring content for children is preferable. Will need to source and / or help create age-appropriate wildlife activities for kids from age 3-12, and have an understanding of how children of different ages consume content.
