Position

  • Experience with the installation of new ship equipment, such as propelling machinery, auxiliary systems but not limited to Motors, pumps, compressors air conditioning systems and steering gear for new vessel construction.
  • Good understanding of maintenance and repair commercial marine engines and gearboxes.
  • Understanding and competence of fault finding with fuel oil, lubricating oil, air and filtration systems, and maintenance of these systems.
  • Knowledge of propellor shaft coupling systems, mounts, glanding and alignment.
  • Experience with fitting and maintenance of overboard, sea suction and general engine room piping systems.
  • Fundamental electrical knowledge of machinery operating systems such as 12- 24 volts.
  • Understanding of generators and their associated control systems with knowledge of single and three phase outputs.
  • Knowledge of hydraulic systems with experience in maintaining existing systems for vessel steering gear and deck equipment.
  • Able to dismantle defective machinery and equipment to gain access to problem area, using hand or power tools and rectification.
  • Inspect and measure parts to detect wear, misalignment, or other potential problems.
  • Identify, remove, and replace worn or defective parts of drive mechanisms or hydraulic systems following blueprints, diagrams, and service manuals.
  • Realign and adjusts components, such as spindles and clutches, following diagrams.
  • Locate damaged air and hydraulic pipes on machinery, cut threads and installation of new pipes.
  • Start machinery and equipment to test operation following repair, with a competent understanding of operating pressures and temperature.
  • Basic knowledge in repairing broken parts, using brazing, soldering, welding equipment and hand tools.
  • Understanding / working from design drawings
  • Safe Isolation of equipment undergoing maintenance

Requirements

  • Experience as a Fitter, time served.
  • Hands-on experience in working with welding tools and materials
  • Good understanding of welding techniques and methods of installation and construction
  • Ability to read technical documents and drawings
  • Willingness to follow safety guidelines at all times
  • Good understanding of basic maths

Other information

Competitive remuneration package with 25 days holiday + bank holidays a year, pension, discount voucher scheme. Full time 38 hr week. Full training & support will be provided where necessary and appropriate. Salary of £25,000 to £28,000 depending on skills and experience. Regular opportunity for overtime paid at premium rates. We will also consider applications from self employed contractors.
