Position

  • To assist the Instrument Team Leader with the day-to-day provision of an analytical service to the Drugs and Alcohols team.
  • To undertake development work to enhance analytical capability, under the direction of the Instrument Team Leader.
  • Operate the GC-MS, HPLC, FT-IR and GC-HS instrumentation according to the requirements identified by the Instrument Team Leader and QMS Procedures.
  • Undertake routine maintenance of equipment and troubleshooting of instrument issues as directed by Instrument Team Leader.
  • Engage with visiting engineers and assist with effecting repairs to minimise instrument down time.
  • Identify potential improvements, and work with the Instrument Team Leader to enhance analytical capability, efficiency and capacity.
  • Assist with maintaining stock levels of consumables, instrument spares and certified reference standards within the team.
  • Identify personal training requirements and seek sources to deliver this training.

Requirements

Technical skills

  • Must be able to operate GC-MS, HPLC, FT-IR and GC-HS instruments.
  • Must be capable of undertaking routine maintenance and troubleshooting of the instruments.
  • Should be familiar with the analytical demands of Drugs forensic case work, including analytical TRT requirements.

  • Good communication skills, both in written and verbal form.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure, and to manage time and resources effectively to meet tight deadlines.

Education and Experience

  • Educated to degree level or vocational equivalent. Competence can also be evidenced from experience and training records.
  • Some analytical experience within a controlled laboratory environment is desirable

The role is full time (37 hours per week) and based at our laboratory in Coventry.
