Utilities Against Slavery (UAS) is a collaborative initiative aiming to use the collective leverage of utility service providers to eradicate modern slavery and labour exploitation from within the utilities sector by providing a space for developing guidance, resources and training together.


This contract offers an opportunity to work with major companies in the utility industry with global operations and supply chains.

Position

The Chair’s role is to ensure that the Group:


  • Develop strategy to meet the UAS mission and annual plans to eradicate modern slavery from the utilities sector.
  • Main point of contact for all UAS group members.
  • Chair UAS meetings which consist of 6-weekly cycle of 2 hour meetings where the group can collaborate on key issues alternating with a 30 minute meeting to discuss current issues and group plans.
  • Meeting planning, preparation and follow up including identifying topics for discussion, engaging with speakers and developing session outputs.
  • Chair 6-weekly steering group meetings where the direction of the group can be reviewed and developed.
  • Work with SFA and external organisations to develop educational material, for example the lunch and learn sessions with the SCSS.
  • Liaise with regulatory bodies to share learning, push for improved policy and to raise the profile of UAS.
  • Liaise with leaders from other sectors to exchange know-how and feedback to UAS on share learning and collaboration opportunities.
  • To assist members in developing support for their anti-slavery agendas within their organisation and demonstrate their impact in their Modern Slavery Statements.
  • Lead on special projects which will benefit the group and that fall out of scope of the business-as-usual 6-weekly meetings.
  • Producing annual reports on UAS’ progress.
  • Encourage all first tier utility providers to join UAS.


Requirements

Knowledge

Essential:

  • Those involved in the provision of the service need an understanding of the utility sector and a passion for addressing human rights/ modern slavery/labour exploitation.

Experience

Essential:

  • Previously held a senior position in a utility or similar organisation delivering to budgets and deadlines
  • Experience in working on human rights/modern slavery/labour exploitation projects.

Desirable:

  • Experience of working with governmental/non-governmental organisations or trade unions
  • Experience working with a membership organisation.

Skills

Essential:

  • Excellent command of English
  • Excellent understanding of Microsoft Office
  • Ability to work with others remotely
  • Ability to manage multiple stakeholders in a polite and efficient manner
  • Strong time-management
  • Ability to work independently delivering day-to-day workload with minimal supervision
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to changing action plans

Salary: £600 per day (excluding VAT), approx 2 days per month.

Contract: 17 month contract (May 2023 - October 2024)

Location: Home based (Occasional travel maybe required to the Manchester Head Office)
