The European Climate Foundation (ECF) was founded in 2008 as a major philanthropic initiative to help tackle climate change by fostering the development of a low-carbon society at the national, European and global level.

We support over 280 partner organisations to carry out activities that contribute to the public debate on climate action, drive urgent and ambitious policy in support of the objectives of the Paris Agreement and help deliver a socially responsible transition to a net-zero emissions economy and sustainable society in Europe and around the world.

Position

About the role

The ECF seeks a writer to help the ECF tell its story to its existing and potential funders and the philanthropic community. The writer will join the External Relations team and, working with the ECF Communications team and with programmes, be responsible for a wide range of products that use the written word to describe our activities. This could include: funding proposals, introductions to the ECF and its mission and programmes, short descriptions of ECF activities and achievements, case studies, presentations, and other kinds of material for communicating what we are doing and what we would like to do.

The role will involve mainly writing but across a wide range of media (printed material, video, web content etc.). The writer will work across the organisation to develop a plan for written material for funder-related external communications, in collaboration with the ECF’s communications team and programmes. This will involve bringing many strands of information together into high-quality written products for communicating with funders and the philanthropic community including web, video, social media, case studies, presentation slides, regular informal newsletters or other forms of reporting to funders, blog posts and other copy for the ECF website, slide decks to present the ECF and its operations and programmes.

Key responsibilities

Reporting to the Director of External Relations, the writer will:

  • Define and execute an annual production plan for written material for funder-related external communications, in collaboration with the ECF’s communications team and programmes.
  • Research, draft, and develop written material for funders, potential funders and the philanthropic community, in collaboration with the ECF’s communications and programme staff and with external consultants, as needed.
  • Explore opportunities to develop the ECF’s funder-related external communications in new formats, e.g. video, infographics, and podcasts to tell the story of the ECF and of climate change.
  • Support teams across the ECF with the review and editing of relevant content.
  • Develop and deliver a regular ECF email newsletter to funders incorporating news from across teams at the organisation.
  • Develop speaking points for ECF staff when speaking at philanthropic events.

Requirements

  • Strong interest in addressing climate change;
  • 5+ years relevant experience;
  • Excellent writing and editing skills with proven ability to translate complex concepts into succinct, clear, accessible language for multiple audiences;
  • Experience in a relevant organisation preferred, e.g. NGO, foundation, think tank or government body;
  • Strong project management skills: attention to detail, ability to set priorities and complete tasks in a timely manner;
  • Enthusiastic team player with the ability to work across different departments and to interact with all levels of management and external partners, in a multi-cultural environment located across many different locations;
  • Strong networking skills enabling effective collaboration with a diverse group of partners;
  • Outcome-oriented, focusing efforts on achieving efficient, timely, quality results;
  • Proficient in Office suite; knowledge of other tools (e.g. graphic design, desktop publishing, and multimedia editing and production tools) preferred.
  • Native level (spoken and written) of the English language; knowledge of other European languages preferred
  • Graduate degree in a relevant discipline, e.g. political and social sciences, earth sciences, communications.
