Company Description

About the European Climate Foundation

The European Climate Foundation (ECF) was established in 2008 as a major philanthropic initiative to help Europe foster the development of a low-carbon society and play an even stronger international leadership role to mitigate climate change. The foundation works through several sectoral, cross-cutting and regional initiatives and collaborates with a wide network of partners to advance progress towards this shared goal.

Position

Context

The ECF is looking to increase its support in favour of ambitious climate action in the Slovak Republic. Given current developments, there is a real opportunity to push the country to be much more progressive when it comes to climate change. The ECF is in particular willing to support the Slovak Republic in seeking ways for carbon neutrality in 2050 horizon, to develop a strong National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP), to phase out from coal and to promote a net-zero agenda at the EU level.

Role and key responsibilities

The ECF would like to hire a communications consultant to support the range of partners and activities in favour of the objectives mentioned above. The Consultant will perform the following tasks:

  • Support ECF grantees and partners in the Slovak Republic in their communication activities: this will involve advising on their communication strategies around key moments in the country, reaching out to journalists (environmental, energy, climate and mainstream) to ensure media coverage of partners’ reports and messages.
  • Support ECF programmes in their outreach in the Slovak Republic: this will involve developing communications strategies around wider ECF priorities, promoting a positive narrative on climate change in the Slovak media and doing outreach of reports from ECF or non-Slovak partners in the Slovak Republic.
  • Spot and disseminate useful stories from the Slovak Republic to other countries and the EU, with a special focus on stories relevant for Eastern Europe and  Visegrád Four (the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia): the Consultant will work in close cooperation with the ECF strategic communications team to identify news and stories on climate change and climate action from the Slovak Republic and disseminate them to other countries or Brussels via the ECF communication network.
  • Maintain trusted relationships with key correspondents and editors across mainstream and specialist media in the Slovak Republic and work proactively with media contacts to shape the reporting around ECF priority issues;
  • Make full use of new and innovative methods of digital communications: work to disseminate messages and raise awareness of ECF-supported initiatives and outputs;
  • Engage with the ECF communications team: the Consultant will take part as necessary in regular catch up calls with the ECF’s communications team, with special focus on Visegrád Four countries.

Reporting to the Strategic Communications Director, Europe, the consultant is expected to work closely with ECF’s relevant programmes and communications team, as well as with ECF partners in Slovak Republic, and in other countries as necessary.
