Company Description

A network of climate groups is seeking a smart, media-savvy Strategic Communications Associate to support our growing work pitching US and global climate stories.

Position

This newly established role will work with a small US team to tailor climate stories for pitching to news media and to develop narratives and backgrounders that are relevant to a range of audiences, including those outside of the climate bubble, by tapping into issues such as security, justice, labor, and foreign policy. The ideal candidate will be able to take a complex issue and make it accessible and compelling to diverse media and American readers. The ideal candidate will also be excited to collaborate with an expanding network of partners, experts and spokespeople, as needed.

This position will primarily support a network of communications professionals working to change the global conversation on climate and energy. As the challenges of the climate crisis increasingly cross borders, this is an exciting opportunity for a talented communications professional with the ambition to make a difference and play an active role in the just transition to a low-carbon world.

This position is a 12 month consultancy contract, with a view to renew on an annual basis.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop creative, audience-tailored, story pitches in collaboration with US and international teams
  • Adapt background materials and research to media-friendly products
  • Coordinate with colleagues on media pitching, building press lists, comms strategy, including climate storytelling for print, online, and broadcast media
  • Draft and pitch op-eds
  • Develop partnerships, including building more media relationships (i.e. columnists, reporters, editorial, foreign correspondents)
  • Cultivate relationships with new experts and spokespeople
  • Gather intel from climate NGO community, help develop strategic approaches to US and global communications interventions
  • Collaborate with the global network, join and participate in meetings, prepare briefings and support colleagues

Requirements

  • Significant proven experience in journalism, writing, PR/media work, or strategic communications
  • Comfort and experience working across complex, interconnected issues and with colleagues from other cultures and nationalities is a plus. US broadcast media experience is also a plus.
  • A demonstrated interest in environmental and social issues, especially as they relate to climate, energy, environmental justice, development or policy
  • Ability to interpret, distill, connect and present information in ways that are appealing to different audiences
  • Ability to think outside the box and creatively bring together different storylines and datasets to tell a story
  • Conscientious and proactive work style
  • Experience managing and executing projects with relatively little supervision (be able to carry through and execute different products)
  • Comfort and sensitivity in working across various nationalities and cultures
  • A genuine commitment to an inclusive and empowering approach to facing climate change
  • Flexibility, including working across timezones, with occasional calls outside of the traditional work day
  • Commitment to diversity and inclusivity in the workspace and in collaborations with partners
