The European Climate Foundation (ECF) was founded in 2008 as a major philanthropic initiative to help tackle climate change by fostering the development of a low-carbon society at the national, European and global level.

The ECF’s Strategic Communications team is the outreach unit of the foundation. Its role is to act as a center of expertise for communication on climate change and to play an active role in helping create more political, media and public endorsement for action on climate change at an international, national and sectoral level.
Team members deliver strategic advice, communications and outreach support to partners and work as part of a global network of communications experts to enhance the public debate on climate change and its solutions more broadly.
The Strategic Communications Digital Associate for Hungary & SEE position offers a unique opportunity for a highly driven individual with a sincere interest in Hungarian (and regional) politics and climate issues to work with a talented team and play an active role in delivering the transition and help avoid the worst impacts of global climate change. In particular, the ECF is willing to support Hungary and other countries of the Southeast European region in seeking ways for carbon neutrality in 2050 horizon and promote a net-zero agenda at the EU level, and to ensure that the country draws on the opportunities created by the national recovery plan and the EU’s ‘Fit for 55’ package to actively engage in the transition towards net-zero.
The Strategic Communications Digital Associate will work to mainly support the ECF’s communications activities in Hungary, with a strong focus on digital communications but not exclusively, while also offering digital support to other communications colleagues across the SEE region. The work will also involve maintaining trusted relationships with key journalists and stakeholders in Hungary. This position will be based in the ECF’s Budapest office, under the supervision of the Strategic Communications Senior Associate for South-Eastern Europe (SEE) who oversees the strategic communications work in the SEE region.
This role would suit someone with a background in communications, digital marketing, or campaigning.
The Strategic Communications Digital Associate, Hungary & SEE, will be responsible for:
Contributing to the development of climate communications strategies with a particular focus on digital communications, with a view to influence and shift public debates about climate action and the related opportunities.
Collaborating with the ECF South-East European team, the ECF sectoral programs and external ECF partners to turn strategy into workable campaigns and deliver materials, stories, voices, and messaging around key moments.
Advising and supporting ECF partners on their digital communications strategies (social media, email, online mobilizations...).
Devising and executing digital communications strategies around specific events or campaigns.
Devising and implementing digital approaches to support the team in its traditional media activities.
Overseeing the implementation of long-term digital engagement projects with partners, including audience targeting and message testing.
Developing and running processes for monitoring and evaluating digital communications activities and providing KPIs analysis to help the team improve its work.
Contributing to non-digital strategic communications work in Hungary, such as drafting media briefs around communications initiatives or supporting projects’ coordination.
Supporting the implementation of various activities (eg. organizing events and meetings, monitoring and reporting on media coverage…).
Other ad-hoc research work and (limited) financial and administrative tasks.
Engaging with relevant ECF teams: taking part in regular meetings with the ECF’s communications team and with the ECF’s South-East European team.
A genuine interest in the mission and values of the ECF;
+3 years of professional experience in the field of communications, including digital communications, ideally with a focus on environmental issues and/or politics;
Experience running successful digital communications campaigns;
Experience with paid ads and SEO;
Ability to create material for social networks, such as short videos, images and computer graphics (graphic design, photo and video editing skills appreciated);
Enthusiasm to help reframe the public debate around the issues of climate change and the energy transition;
Ability to understand and follow confidentiality rules;
Excellent writing skills;
Excellent command of Hungarian language and fluent in English;
Fast-learning, self-starter, comfortable to work in a fast-paced international environment;
Ability to work flexibly both independently and in a team, to foster fruitful relationships and to collaborate with stakeholders internally and externally;
The disposition to work with colleagues in a high trust global community of peers with a spirit of generosity and mutual support;
