Position

About the role

The ECF’s Land Use programme was set up in 2020 to help Europe address greenhouse gases from the land-use sector, both in Europe and internationally. The programme works with a wide range of partners in civil society, think tanks, business groups and the research community in support of positive action to change the debate about land use and climate change and to accelerate policy solutions in the areas of agriculture, food, forests and nature.

This role is to provide temporary cover during the absence for parental leave of the current Programme Manager. The exact role can be shaped to suit the selected candidate. The main focus of the position is to lead the ECF’s work on reform of European food and agriculture policy.


Key responsibilities

Reporting to the Director of the ECF’s Land Use programme, the Programme Manager will be responsible for:

  • Managing a multi-annual strategic grant-making programme for reform of European food and agriculture policy;
  • Helping to build a broad, multi-stakeholder campaign across the EU towards food- and agriculture-policy reform, using multiple tactics (advocacy, communications, targeted analysis, strategic litigation, field building, citizen mobilization etc.)
  • Supporting ECF colleagues on programming within the EU Member States most critical to this effort, i.e. Spain, France, Poland and Germany;
  • Managing grants and grantee relationships
  • Convening ECF partners and external stakeholders to create new coalitions and identify areas for progress;
  • Working closely with the ECF’s strategic communications team and with outside bodies like the Global Strategic Communications Council to ensure that the communications are fully integrated into programming;
  • With the Land Use director, engaging with the philanthropic community.

Requirements

Experience and competencies

  • Demonstrated interest in the mission and values of the ECF;
  • At least 10 years of experience of working on advocacy, policy analysis or campaigning in an environmental area;
  • Strong knowledge of climate change policy or related issues; specific knowledge of and experience working on agriculture and/or food policy preferred;
  • A strong understanding of the processes and dynamics of EU and/or national policy making;
  • Excellent command of spoken and written English; knowledge of other European languages an advantage;
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing strategies to achieve change;
  • Attention to detail; flexibility; ability to work independently and to prioritise tasks in a fast-moving work environment;
  • Ability to work as part of a team, to foster fruitful relationships and to collaborate with stakeholders internally and externally;
  • Disposition to work with colleagues in a high-trust international community of peers with a spirit of generosity and mutual support.
