The European Climate Foundation (ECF) was founded in 2008 as a major philanthropic initiative to help tackle climate change by fostering the development of a low-carbon society at the national, European and global level.

We support over 280 partner organisations to carry out activities that contribute to the public debate on climate action, drive urgent and ambitious policy in support of the objectives of the Paris Agreement and help deliver a socially responsible transition to a net-zero emissions economy and sustainable society in Europe and around the world.

Position

About the role

The International Group at the European Climate Foundation is looking for an Associate to support the International Climate Politics Hub. The priority of the role is primarily to provide funding, budget and financial management for both platform secretariats.

The International Climate Politics Hub is an international network of actors working together to facilitate an increase in global climate ambition and ensure that every opportunity – directly or indirectly related to climate – is used as a launchpad to leverage this ambition. The network is wide ranging and includes representation from across think tank, NGO, Government, business, investors, cities, and civil society organisations. We aim to set the world on track to achieve the Paris Agreement’s objectives on time, co- developing a regularly updated political influence strategy to guide our actions.

Key responsibilities

Budget, Finance and Grant Management

  • Responsible for budget planning and management, including maintaining a clear and effective system which support strategic decisions in grant making
  • Oversee overall financial management, planning, due diligence, systems and spending to ensure effective and timely delivery and reporting on large platform budget
  • Communicate operations, budget planning, and financial procedures to all team members and grantees where relevant, and support and co-ordinate as needed
  • Support the Directors and teams in development grant making strategy and/or investment strategy
  • Work closely with ECF Grants & Admin Hub and the platforms to ensure grant portfolio management, grant compliance and quality and timely grantee proposals and reporting.

Funding Management and Funder Relation Support

  • Oversee existing funding contracts, including funding source management according to funding commitment, restriction and compliance
  • Work closely with External Relations to help teams develop quality funding proposals and smooth processes for funding applications and agreements
  • Act as a liaison to report progress to funders, including the preparation of funder narrative and financial reports, deliverables and annual performance review

Monitoring and Evaluation

  • Support the Directors and team with the Monitoring and Evaluation project, including communications and coordination between consultants and the teams, project overview with the funder, and support for development and implementation of team M&E strategy
  • Implement the uptake of ECF PARL system for strategy planning
  • Monitor the progress and provide suggestion to the Directors and the teams

ECF Internal engagement

  • Liaise with ECF operations, finance, M&E and external relation teams
  • Support the team to adhere to ECF guidelines and procedures on all operational matters

Requirements

Experience and competencies

  • Interest in climate and the environment
  • 4 – 5 years of professional experience in budget and finance management
  • A high standard of financial literacy and experience of evaluating financial reports and budgets
  • An understanding of and interest in the philanthropy section and experience in working with international NGOs
  • Excellent communications skills, including fluent spoken and written English
  • Excellent attention to detail, diligence and reliability
  • Excellent strategic thinking, organisational, negotiation and time management skills, with a proven ability to work well under pressure, take initiative and be a creative problem-solver
  • Proficiency with office software such as Microsoft Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Teams
  • Tactful with colleagues and discrete with high-level information
