We support over 280 partner organisations to carry out activities that contribute to the public debate on climate action, drive urgent and ambitious policy in support of the objectives of the Paris Agreement and help deliver a socially responsible transition to a net-zero emissions economy and sustainable society in Europe and around the world.

Position

About the role

The Legal and Governance Officer gives advice on/coordinates legal matters regarding ECF business, 501(3)c compliance, grants and consultant contracts. Of primary importance is recognising and maintaining ECF’s reputation and charitable purpose status. Therefore he/she collaborates closely with the Grants Manager, the External Relations team, Programme staff and external law firms.

He/she also safeguards/coordinates the compliance with applicable rules when the ECF and its hosted entities are expanding internationally.

The legal officer initially reports to the Chief Operating Officer, until a new structure in the Operations department has been set-up.

Key responsibilities

  • You are the first point of contact for legal questions on grants, funders and consultant contracts;
  • You contribute on implementing and upholding good corporate governance practices in the organisation;
  • You support the Grants Manager, the External Relations team and the Programme staff in negotiating legal aspects related to their contracts;
  • When necessary, you make use of the expertise of professional partners (law firms);
  • You screen the existing contracts and are also involved in drafting new contracts;
  • You oversee the data protection compliance;
  • You detect international law firms to collaborate with on legal matters regarding to the international expansion of the organisation;
  • You make sure international expansion is in compliance with the applicable rules/laws.

Requirements

Experience and competencies

  • You have a strong interest in climate and the environment;
  • You hold a degree in law;
  • You have 3-5 years of experience in the field of business/contract law;
  • You are a true problem solver and have an analytical mind;
  • You are organised and have an eye for details;
  • You have strong networking skills that enable effective collaboration with a diverse group of stakeholders;
  • You recognize and uphold the values of the ECF and can help implement them;
  • You have an excellent command of the English and Dutch languages (both spoken and written).
