About the role

The ECF’s strategic communications team is the outreach unit of the foundation. Its role is to act as a centre of expertise for communication on climate change and to play an active role in helping create more political, media and public endorsement for action on climate change at an international, national and sectoral level. Team members deliver strategic advice, communications and outreach support to ECF’s programmes and its grantees, and work as part of a global network of communications experts to enhance the public debate on climate change and its solutions more broadly.

The IT Manager, Strategic Communications will be responsible for streamlining, developing and running an excellent set of IT systems to support the work of an international, remote-first team. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and highly driven professional who wants to deploy their technical and systems wizardry to a growing international team in a non-profit context.

He/she will liaise closely with the ECF IT Manager and IT Team, the Operations Team, the strategic communications team and external providers and partners.

The IT Manager, Strategic Communications will report to the Operations Director, Strategic Communications.

Key responsibilities

• Establishing systems to meet the day-to-day IT needs of a global team;

• Optimising and further developing an existing suite of online tools, including core email and internal communications systems, and other IT systems as needed, and advising on provision of hardware as needed;

• Ensuring IT support infrastructure is in place for team members as needed;

• Overseeing auditing and strengthening of IT security for a global team, including training colleagues to improve their online security, working with or commissioning external consultants and security experts, and developing IT security best practice;

• Overseeing IT training and inductions to colleagues;

• Deploying new tools and systems that involve specific internal communications needs, and managing pre-production environments, including working with external agencies;

• Overseeing an IT budget for the strategic communications team;

• Developing, maintaining and documenting robust systems and procedures.

Experience and competencies

The ideal candidate will have:

Essential:

• At least 8 years’ relevant work experience and education or professional training, or extensive relevant experience in operationally deploying IT systems;

• Strategic thinking and the ability to scope, design and implement robust IT solutions for remote international teams;

• Service orientation and the ability to identify and articulate IT business needs in collaboration with colleagues;

• Excellent technical familiarity with configuring and deploying common online communications tool suites, with basic development skills a plus;

• The drive to innovate and streamline systems, and the ability to creatively solve problems;

• Excellent communication skills in English (both spoken and written), other languages a plus;

• The versatile and adaptable skills necessary to flourish in a fast-paced and wide-ranging work environment where remote work is the norm;

• An ability to take responsibility and work with minimal oversight;

• The disposition to work generously with colleagues in an international, multicultural community of peers, and the ability to work across international norms and values;

• A significant interest in climate and the environment;

• A passion for excellence.

Desirable:

• A track record of managing effective IT support to international teams based in multiple countries;

• A strong practical understanding of the challenges and solutions around online security;

• Experience managing external service providers and/or a small team.

Flexible with occasional international travel (COVID-permitting). Candidates must be located in Europe. We may be able to provide co-working spaces in some locations.
