Director, Finance Programme (location flexible)

European Climate Foundation London United Kingdom Programme Management

Company Description

The European Climate Foundation (ECF) was founded in 2008 as a major philanthropic initiative to help tackle climate change by fostering the development of a low-carbon society at the national, European and global level.

We support over 280 partner organisations to carry out activities that contribute to the public debate on climate action, drive urgent and ambitious policy in support of the objectives of the Paris Agreement and help deliver a socially responsible transition to a net-zero emissions economy and sustainable society in Europe and around the world.

About the role

The ECF Finance Programme aims to support a change to the way capital is allocated to enable the transition away from a fossil-based economy to one that is efficient, dynamic and predominantly powered by renewable energy. This means supporting activities such as the following:

  • Working to ensure that decisions about the allocation of capital within Europe increasingly factor in the need to transition to a low-carbon economy;
  • Working to leverage Europe’s role in global approaches to climate risk in the financial system;
  • Contributing to efforts to increase transparency and disclosure of climate risk in the finance sector;
  • Overseeing platforms for dialogue with the private finance sector.

The Programme Director, Finance is responsible for developing and implementing strategies to ensure that the allocation of capital in Europe is increasingly aligned with the imperative to tackle climate change. These strategies are developed with input from our funders; our grantees; other ECF directors; and the ECF Executive Director, EU Policies, with a view to ensuring they are technologically feasible, economically viable, and robust to the realpolitik of Europe’s political system. The Programme Director, Finance will also contribute to developing global strategies that leverage Europe’s role in the global climate finance debate.

  • Lead, coach and develop the ECF Finance Programme team;

  • Overseeing dissemination of the findings and policy positions that result from ECF-led projects, including via media outreach, government relations and public events;

  • A genuine interest in the mission and values of the ECF;
  • The applicant should have 10 years of relevant work experience and there is a strong preference for 5 or more years in private finance;
  • A reasonable knowledge of EU public finance;
  • Strong networking skills that enable effective collaboration with a diverse group of partners;
  • Strategic agile leader, with the ability to follow through with smart and adaptive implementation plans;
