Awen Cultural Trust

Awen Cultural Trust is a registered charity based in Bridgend, South Wales. Our purpose

is to make people’s lives better, which we achieve by delivering inspirational cultural events, activities and programmes. Awen engages with over one million visitors a year through a diverse range of facilities and services which include theatres, libraries, community centres, historic house and country park, and two work-based projects for adults with learning and physical disabilities. Awen’s work has significant impact on local economies, individual wellbeing and community cohesion.


Awen Trading Limited

Awen Trading Limited is the wholly owned trading subsidiary of Awen Cultural Trust, a registered charity based in Bridgend, South Wales. Awen Trading Limited’s aim is to develop a group of socially responsible businesses that compete commercially, exceed customer expectations and generate healthy profits which, in turn, are gifted aided back to the parent charity. Currently, these businesses include the Caffi Bar at the Grand Pavilion in Porthcawl and Bryngarw House, an exclusive wedding venue based in the grounds of Bryngarw Country Park.

Position

You will carry out ranger duties to ensure the park is well-managed and maintained, conserving its important heritage and ensuring it provides a welcoming environment for visitors.

Working closely with the team at Bryngarw Park you will also assist with the planning and delivery of educational and conservation events and activities.

What will you be doing?

  • Conducting park maintenance and countryside management tasks.

  • Working with the Bryngarw Park Team to develop and enhance the customer experience at Bryngarw Park, though education, interpretation and our events programme.

  • Supporting and delivering, where appropriate, education and park activities including, but not limited to, bush craft, nest box creations and pond dipping.

  • Assisting the Operations Manager for Natural Heritage with the development and implementation of projects aligned to Awen’s Business Plan.

  • Responsible for the opening and closing of the park and visitor centre as and when required.

  • Working alongside and supporting colleagues to complete conservation tasks, including, but not limited to, surveys, studies and the enhancement of Bryngarw Country Park’s and the Valleys Regional Park Programme.

  • Managing habitats across the park to maintain favourable conditions for wildlife.

Qualifications, Skills, Abilities and Experience

  • Educated to GCSE level or equivalent or able to demonstrate similar knowledge and expertise through experience (E)

  • Good verbal and written communication skills (E) 

  • Good time management and ability to follow instructions (E)

  • Ability to work on own initiative as well as a key member of a team (E)

  • An interest and understanding of natural history and the environment (E)

  • Proven knowledge and experience of countryside and estate management roles   

  • Experience of delivering or participating in educational programmes and events  

  • Knowledge and understanding of health and safety regulations in general and those relating to country parks in particular

  • Formal First Aid qualification  

  • Formal chainsaw usage qualification

  • Evidence and understanding of Awen’s offer and services

  • Ability to speak Welsh

  • Able to lift, move, and carry loads/stock and other equipment/items as necessary
