Awen Cultural Trust

Awen Cultural Trust is a registered charity based in Bridgend, South Wales. Our purpose

is to make people’s lives better, which we achieve by delivering inspirational cultural events, activities and programmes. Awen engages with over one million visitors a year through a diverse range of facilities and services which include theatres, libraries, community centres, historic house and country park, and two work-based projects for adults with learning and physical disabilities. Awen Trading Limited

Awen Trading Limited is the wholly owned trading subsidiary of Awen Cultural Trust, a registered charity based in Bridgend, South Wales. Awen Trading Limited’s aim is to develop a group of socially responsible businesses that compete commercially, exceed customer expectations and generate healthy profits which, in turn, are gifted aided back to the parent charity. Currently, these businesses include the Caffi Bar at the Grand Pavilion in Porthcawl and Bryngarw House, an exclusive wedding venue based in the grounds of Bryngarw Country Park.

Position

Working as an integral part of Awen’s finance team you will take the lead on finance for Awen’s venues and trading subsidiary. You will work closely with venue management teams to ensure that the business is provided with the necessary finance management support and support the Head of Finance in developing a resilient and skilled finance team to meet the needs of the business. 

What will you be doing?

  • Working closely with the Head of Food & Beverage each week to determine prior week performance and help plan actions to be taken to resolve any issues. 

  • Working closely with the Head of Cultural Development, attending all performance meetings to gain understanding of current and full year performance and work to resolve any potential issues to the budget being attained. 

  • Completing analysis on the events and giving advice to the Programme and Development Manager in relation to financial forecasting and beneficial strategies to improve income. 

  • Signing off all event settlements within agreed timescales. 

  • Acting as the point of contact for artistes and their management for any financial queries. 

  • Completing relevant analysis on the events and giving advice to Awen’s Programme and Development Manager as appropriate. 

  • Responsible for ensuring all month end duties are completed within set deadlines included but not limited to – balance sheet reconciliations, preparing folder for review by Head of Finance, accruals and prepayments, deferred income, stock take management. 

  • Responsible for holding Finance business partner month end meetings to give details of variances to Management Accountant/Head of Finance and working together to write the commentary for the accounts.  

  • Responsible for reconciling Awen’s Trading bank account on Exchequer in a timely manner and in line with Awen’s policy and processes. 

  • Taking a lead role during internal and external audits in relation to accounting records for Awen Trading and relevant venue accounts management. 

  • Supporting the Head of Finance in relation to the preparation of VAT returns for Awen Trading Ltd. 

  • Running and presenting reports with analysis to the Executive Leadership Team and Venues Management Teams from relevant software e.g. Exchequer, Ticketsolve, Yesplan, EPOSnow. 

  • Responsible for maintaining records and accurate reporting for any artistic grants. 

  • Completing KPI reporting required for quarterly returns for venues and monthly dashboards. 

  • Ensuring Wedding Profit and Loss accounts are kept up to date, flagging any anomalies and advising on solutions. 

  • Helping the venues management team complete their yearly budgets and mid-year forecasts. 

  • Being able to deputise for Head of Finance when required in finance committee or board meetings. 

  • Managing venues finance apprentice role, ensuring they keep up to date with their workload and mentoring them through their apprenticeship.

Qualifications, Skills, Abilities and Experience

  • Ability to work under pressure, be organised and meet tight deadlines (E)

  • Analytical with a systematic and methodical approach to problem solving (E)

  • Excellent ICT skills with the ability to understand and report on business information and measures (E)

  • Formal accountancy qualification e.g. CIMA/ACCA/ACA, if exam qualified at be able to demonstrate relevant working experience at the level required (E)

  • Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Excel and ability to use a variety of Financial and payroll related software (E)

  • A full driving licence and access to your own vehicle for work purposes (E)

  • Excellent report writing and presentation skills including the ability to explain complex matters simply.

  • Experience of dealing with financial transactions and cash handling and of recording accounting transactions and maintaining financial records.

  • Ability to work innovatively and creatively to initiate new developments.  

  • Evidence and understanding of Awen’s offer and services.  

  • Ability to speak Welsh.
