Locally: The Karalius Foundation will be a independent special school that will empower  young people through a rich curriculum.

Regionally: The Karalius Foundation will work with local authorities and PRUs regionally to improve the quality of provision offered and provide curriculum support.

Nationally: The Karalius Foundation will conduct national benchmarking and workforce support to improve the quality of education for disengaged young people and in turn will influence policy on a national scale.

Salary: £28,000 - £35,000 dependent on experience

Job Description

The Karalius Foundation is an SEMH independent school that provides education for KS4 pupils. Our curriculum is unique offering qualifications that are designed specifically for our school and cohort of learners. We will offer intense mentoring and support for pupils, placing them in a class with a maximum of 7pupils.

We have high expectations of our pupils; build a secure and happy atmosphere in which pupils can learn effectively.

As Emotional Wellbeing Lead you will be responsible for leading and managing behaviour, attendance and family intervention. You will work closely with the Head of Foundation and Pastoral Manager.

Purpose:

  • To provide a high-quality counselling service to students experiencing a wide range of emotional, social and/or behavioural problems.
  • Oversee the whole-school approach towards promoting positive mental wellbeing amongst pupils and staff.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to promoting the mental wellbeing of all pupils and staff, ensuring it is the focus of all actions undertaken in the role.
  • Work with the SLT to create a culture which values all pupils, allows them to feel a sense of belonging, and encourages them to talk about any issues in a non-judgemental environment.
  • Raise awareness amongst staff, pupils and parents on the importance of mental wellbeing.
  • To provide support, guidance and advice to parents, carers and the school.
  • To observe confidentiality and to support the school’s endeavour to provide excellent teaching and learning for all students.
  • Contribute to the safeguarding and promotion of the welfare and personal care of pupils.

Responsibilities:

  • To be responsible for the confidential counselling services to students as needed -  individual basis and small group settings.
  • To liaise with the Designated Safeguarding Lead on a frequent basis and be part of the safeguarding team
  • Support the identification of at-risk pupils or those demonstrating signs of mental ill health.
  • To be responsible for advice and support to staff.
  • Coordinate the mental health needs of pupils within the school and oversee the delivery of interventions.
  • To be responsible for maintaining appropriate and confidential records.
  • To provide regular audit information as required.
  • Keep up-to-date with local mental health services and refer pupils in need these services where appropriate.
  • Work with the parents of any pupils who have mental health problems to effectively coordinate support.
  • Ensure the school’s approach towards mental wellbeing is reflected in relevant policies, the curriculum and pastoral support.
  • To continually review and evaluate the service. 
  • To be alert to trends and patterns of problems and to be willing to identify causes and recommend corrective action.
  • Providing written reports as appropriate on the management of mental wellbeing at the school.

Continuing Professional Development:

  • Take responsibility for personal professional development, keeping up-to-date with research and developments which may lead to improvements in the counselling service provided.
  • Provide advice and contribute to specialist training programmes for school staff on mental wellbeing.

Support for the School:

  • Undertake training and CPD as required.
  • Work with members of staff to develop and implement strategies to improve mental wellbeing in the school.
  • Appreciate and support the role of colleagues and other professionals in external services and build constructive relationships with them.
  • Attend and participate in relevant meetings as required.
  • Assist with the supervision of pupils out of lesson times, including before and after school and at lunch time, as required.
  • Adhere to Schools policies and regulations including those relating to employee conduct, equal opportunities, health and safety, safeguarding and child protection.
  • Undertake such other associated duties as may be required by the Executive Headteacher.
  • Accompany teaching staff and pupils on visits, trips and out of school activities as required and take responsibility for pupil/s under the supervision of the teacher.
  • Be a role model for pupils and colleagues in terms of behaviour and attitude.
  • Be punctual and professional at all times.
  • Maintain confidentiality.

GENERAL AND SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Essential

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team                        
  • An understanding of the developmental, emotional, social and educational issues of children and young people                 
  • Have experience of working with vulnerable people in a similar environment.                     
  • Good written and verbal communication.  Good personal organisation e.g. time management.                   
  • Ability to show initiative in a range of situations                
  • Ability to interact positively with pupils, parents and colleagues                 
  • Be experienced in working with smaller nurture groups to boost attainment.                       
  • Knowledge of local Mental Health Service                            
  • Strong organisational and administrative skills with a keen eye for detail                                
  • Knowledge of the Children’s Act and legislation pertaining to children                     

Desirable

  • Experience of working with KS4
  • Relevant training in special educational needs

RELEVANT EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • Experience of working with pupils who have social, emotional and mental health difficulties
  • Experience of implementing intervention strategies to support pupils                     

Desirable

  • Minimum of 2 year’s post qualification experience and recent experience of working in secondary education
  • Experience of nurture provision and outdoor learning
  • Experience of liaison and co-operation with other professional agencies

EDUCATION AND TRAINING

Essential

  • Post-graduate Diploma or Masters level in Counselling or Psychotherapy                
  • GCSE Maths and English Grade C or equivalent  
  • Commitment to continue professional development                      
  • BACP Accreditation, UKCP registration or BPC.  To uphold good practice as described by the BACP ethical guidelines.                         
  • Further therapeutic training or qualification in working with children and young people 
  • Level 3 Safeguarding                     
  • Cognitive Behavioural Approaches                          
  • Mental health qualification                         

Desirable

  • Evidence of recent INSET
